With so many sports to choose from in Marin and The Bay Area, there’s no excuse for kids not to be active!

Here’s some information that might help you if you’re just getting started. If you’re new to the kids sport scene in Marin, you may want to read the “Notes” at the bottom of this page.

Note: AAU & Travel Leagues are year round. There are also clinics offered by various organizations throughout the year.

Travel Baseball Teams
Travel teams are for those kids and parents who are committed to the sport as it requires additional time, expenses and dedication as compared to a regular league. As the name implies, travel ball requires players to travel to various locations for tournaments. Players must try out to make the team.

Rec soccer sign ups in the Spring and season generally from early Sept. to first week in November.   Teams established based on grade rather than age.

Spring academy, camps and other special clinics offered throughout the year

Competitive soccer - must tryout (most tryouts end of April – early May involving up to 3 days)  U9 – U19 Girls and Boys

Competitive Clinics/camps run throughout the season but must be a competitive player on a team to participate.  Season length varies depending on age.  Depending on the number of skilled players, 1-3 teams established usually Gold, Silver and Bronze.  Season generally begins in Sept. Competitive teams require travel usually 3-4 tournaments and local games in Marin County and Sonoma County.

Development Program - a rec player may be invited to train as a development player (no guarantee that he/she will actually play a competitive game).  This usually means that the player continues to train & play with his/her rec team while also training with a competitive team.  

Indoor Soccer
Runs January thru March.

  • Dave Frommer’s Indoor Soccer Players will develop a greater understanding for the game of soccer as they constantly have to stay involved. Ball control is essential and develops footwork, speed, and coordination. 
  • Marin Futsal Registration ends early December. Open to girls and boys U7, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U19.


SWIMMING

Marin Swim League Age K-12. Summer league (March – July). 10 teams in Marin. Some swim teams offer year-round swimming.

TENNIS

Youth Tennis Programs offered in some after-school programs and thru service organizations. Junior Team Tennis leagues also offered at many club and parks. Notes:

  • In most sports there are different levels based on varying levels of skill and commitment. Recreational leagues are run through Parks and Rec departments, while club sports are usually private with more emphasis on competition.
  • AAU leagues are year round leagues that are usually geared for the more competitive player. Travel teams are also more competitive and require not only the commitment of the player, but the parent as well (based on travel time, expenses and extra coaching).
  • Some leagues use the “U” age groups. For example, if a division is for 12U, this means that the player must not be turning 13 until a specified date (e.g., September 1).
