The Presidio Nature Challenge is a BioBlitz, or a chance to see and record the many wild plants and animals that thrive in the Presidio. The Presidio's BioBlitz will pair volunteers with professional naturalists on a scientific adventure through the Presidio's wildest places. All of the observations recorded during the day will help San Francisco win the 2018 City Nature Challenge – a competition between more than 60 cities worldwide, an effort to see who can make the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most people during the challenge. This is an adventure for the whole family.
HOW WILL WE RECORD OUR OBSERVATIONS?
We'll use the iNaturalist app, a community-powered tool developed by the California Academy of Sciences for citizen scientists to upload and share observations in the field. Users can also seek help from other users for plant and animal identification.
Download the app on your smartphone and create an account prior to arrival at the Presidio Nature Challenge. If you don't have access to a smartphone, Project Homeless Connect will provide Google phones and tablets for participants to borrow for the event in the Presidio. Groups may also team-up and share equipment, or find ways to make observations without electronic devices.
WHAT ELSE SHOULD I BRING?
You should dress in long pants, long sleeves, layered clothing, and sturdy close-toed shoes (no shorts or sandals). Additional weather gear, i.e. a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, rain gear, snacks, and a water bottle are also suggested. Be prepared for the elements, and to get dirty!
