YOSVANY TERRY & GEMA CORREDERA + ARUN RAMAMURTHY TRIO

  • Esplanade, Yerba Buena Gardens 760 Howard Street San Francisco, CA, 94103 United States (map)

Over the past two decades Cuban-born saxophonist, composer and chekere maestro Yosvany Terry has presented some of YBG Festival’s most exciting concerts and he’s ready to add to his legacy. Hailing from an illustrious musical clan from the cultural hotbed of Camagüey, Terry presents his jazz quintet with powerhouse Cuban vocalist Gema Corredera. A rising star in Latin America who’s just starting to introduce herself to US audiences, she’s a commanding performer with an expansive stylistic palette encompassing güaracha, bolero, rumba, son montuno, jazz, R&B and flamenco. As a senior lecturer and director of jazz bands at Harvard University, Terry delivers profound Afro-Cuban tradition with every performance.

Offering striking contrasts in cadences, the Carnatic violinist Arun Ramamurthy shares the double bill with his New York trio featuring former Bay Area drummer Sameer Gupta and electric bassist Damon Banks. Steeped in South Indian classical forms, the combo is known for its thrilling improvisational flights fusing the spirit of raga music and jazz. Ramamurthy comes bearing “New Moon Suite,” a four-movement work commissioned by Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works that premiered late last year in New York City.
