Discovery Day Open House

Experience science in action at the only marine laboratory on the San Francisco Bay, SF State's Estuary & Ocean Science Center. As this is SF State's 40th Anniversary supporting estuary and ocean science on the bay, the activities will be focused on comparing SF Bay and marine science as they were, then and now.

Try your hand at making a measurement. Learn about the tools of the trade. Help collect data to answer a research question. Play a game and learn a new concept. Explore the patterns in nature. Learn about solutions to environmental challenges.

Collect microscopic life from the Bay (plankton) and view it on microscopes, hold and measure invasive green crabs, enjoy collaborative art projects and design challenges, and be among the first to see the work of the California Coastal Commission's K-12 2018 Coastal Art & Poetry Contest!

Admission and parking for Discovery Day is FREE, but registration is required!

Answers to FAQs:

  • This a family and kid-friendly event. There will be activities suitable for children, teens and adults. Most are geared for ages 5 and up.

  • Refreshments are available for purchase, including Three Twins ice cream truck, and seating is available. Water refill stations for your reusable bottles are offered around the venue, and there is limited outdoor seating and shade. You are welcome to bring your own snacks.

  • No dogs or other pets are allowed. For the safety and comfort of all our visitors and your pet, please leave your four-legged friends at home. It may be a hot day and there is no shade in our parking area, so please do not leave your dog in your car.

Special Notes

The Estuary & Ocean Science [EOS] Center is located at 3150 Paradise Drive, Tiburon. There is no public transportation directly to the EOS Center, but ferries stop in downtown Tiburon, 3 miles away, and Golden Gate Transit buses drop off at Highway 101. You can ride a bike from those locations. Paradise Drive is a popular and scenic bike route. We have ample free car and bike parking. Carpooling is encouraged!
