Unplug and Play at Sunday Streets

Even though I live in Marin County, I consider the entire Bay Area my backyard. Which is why events in San Francisco, like Sunday Streets, is tops on my personal “must do” list. Sunday Streets is a FREE community event where foot traffic replaces car traffic. The streets are lined with bike riders, roller skaters/bladers, runners, dog walkers, young and old. It is held from March-October at different spots around the great city of San Francisco.

2018 Season Of Events

Camp Sunday Streets, February 17th, 11am-2pm, 301 8th Street, Suite 235, San Francisco.

Mission, March 11th, 11am-4pm, Duboce Ave to 26th St, Valencia Street.

Excelsior, March 25th, 11am-4pm, on Mission Street, from Silver Avenue to Geneva Avenue.

Bayview/Dogpatch, April 15th, 11am-4pm, main corridor of Third Street.

Tenderloin, May 6th, 11am-4pm, Larkin St, Ellis St, Jones St, Golden Gate Ave.

Sunset/Golden Gate Park, June 3rd, 11am-4pm, Outer Sunset and parts of Golden Gate Park, following the city’s western edge along the super-scenic Great Highway.

Mission, July 15th, 11am-4pm, Duboce Ave to 26th St, Valencia Street.

Western Addition, September 9th, 11am-4pm,  along Fillmore St and Baker St.

Tenderloin, September 23rd, 11am-4pm, on Ellis and Golden Gate Ave.

Excelsior, October 14th, 11am-4pm, Silver Avenue to Geneva Avenue.

Sunday Streets 2018 features a new “mystery route” to be revealed later in the season.

Sunday Streets originated in Bogotá, Colombia in 1976. There, it is known as “Ciclovía”, a day of free, healthy activities that promote community in public streets. This concept has spread around the world and has been adopted by San Francisco and other cities across the country, openstreetsproject.org. Other Sunday Streets close to home include Berkeley, Oakland and Santa Cruz. Los Angeles has a huge event called CicLAvia (www.ciclavia.org).
