Ways to Celebrate Earth Day 2021

Despite the shelter-in-place order, Earth Day has NOT been cancelled. Sure all public events marking Earth Day 2021 will not be taking place but you can still dedicate this day to "Mother Earth" in your own special way to commemorate the modern environmental movement and perhaps continue to incorporate this time into your daily life when this era of self-isolation is over. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Take a Solo Nature Walk

An impactful way to nurture a child’s connection to the natural world is to take a solo nature walk. I first learned about solo nature walks on my daughter’s class trip to Walker Creek in Petaluma, CA. It was the perfect way to feel and listen to the sounds of the natural world while feeling a deeper connection to the Earth. Pick a quiet path, lay cards on the ground with instructions and send each person individually to do the tasks while maintaining a safe distance from others. Design your own cards to fit the environment you plan to explore. Focus on the native flora and fauna in your immediate area. Some other card ideas, “Tell this tree a secret”, “Take a deep breath and think about what you smell”, “What shaped leaves do you see on the ground” or a favorite quote.
