SFJAZZ FAMILY MATINEE SEASON

**TIFFANY AUSTIN**

**September 14, 11am**
Vocalist and composer Tiffany Austin has quickly become a force in jazz, with an ebullient style and soulful eloquence that honor the vocal greats while pushing forward in search of new territory. Her 2018 release, *Unbroken* (on the Con Alma Music label), celebrates the indelible link between jazz and the blues, and showcases her talents in the lineage of Bessie Smith and Betty Carter. We kick off our matinee season with the transformative power of song and honor the instrument we all share: the voice!

**Rebeca Mauleón & Friends**

**October 5, 11am**
Cuban music is undoubtedly some of the most joyful on the planet, and in 1950s Cuba, one of the most exciting manifestations of that joy was heard in the *descarga*, the term for jam session on the island. Spearheaded by musicians such as Bebo Valdés, Peruchín, Frank Emilio, Guillermo Barreto, Tata Güines, Israel “Cachao” López, and many others, the *descarga* was Cuba’s answer to the cutting session in jazz, allowing musicians to cut loose and fly free. For this matinee led by pianist and SFJAZZ Director of Education Rebeca Mauleón, we are thrilled to welcome several giants of the music along with a cadre of Cuban artists who call the Bay Area home, with a special guest appearance by legendary pianist and Resident Artistic Director Chucho Valdés!

ALPHABET ROCKERS

**November 16, 11am**
Alphabet Rockers make music that makes change. Led by Kaitlin McGaw and Tommy Shepherd, this GRAMMY-nominated group creates brave spaces to shape a more equitable world through hip hop. Known for their multigenerational presentations, Alphabet Rockers bring messages of hope, empowerment, and social justice to audiences around the country, reminding us of the power of community. For this special and interactive Family Matinee, we invite the entire audience to sing, clap, and move and, as the Rockers say, “BE YOU and GET LOUD!”

**ADAM SHULMAN**

December 21, 11am
A creative force on the San Francisco jazz scene for the past decade, pianist Adam Shulman reprises his tribute to Bay Area jazz legend Vince Guaraldi and his beloved soundtrack to Charles Schulz’s 1965 holiday classic, *A Charlie Brown Christmas*. Join us for a joyful look and listen back as we get grooving and swinging to favorites including “Linus and Lucy”and “Christmas is Coming,” and celebrate the holidays with the entire family!

**MARCUS SHELBY**

February 15, 11am
Bassist, bandleader, and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Marcus Shelby has graced our Family Matinee stages for over a decade, delighting audiences with his electrifying compositions and arrangements as well as his wealth of knowledge of our shared musical heritage. From roots music, to the powerful songs of freedom that shaped the civil rights movement, Shelby takes us on a journey of soulful discovery of the blues as we honor Black History Month.

**TAMMY L. HALL**

March 28, 11am
The epitome of mastery on the “black and whites,” we pay tribute to some of the reigning queens of jazz piano with powerhouse pianist Tammy L. Hall. From legendary and influential figures such as Lil Hardin Armstrong, Mary Lou Williams, Hazel Scott, and Marian McPartland, to international phenoms including Brazil’s Tania Maria, join us in celebration of some of the world’s great ladies of the 88s!

**SFJAZZ MONDAY NIGHT BAND**

**April 18, 11am**
There is nothing like the sound of a big band to lift the spirits, and SFJAZZ’s premier community ensemble—the Monday Night Band— proves it with their Family Matinee debut! Led by multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, and composer Adam Theis, this ensemble presents classic to contemporary repertoire, much of it arranged by members of the band. With an age range of high-schoolers to retirees, Monday Night Band brings the community together to play, sing, and dance!

MIGUEL ZENÓN

**May 9, 11am**
SFJAZZ Collective founding alto saxophonist presents *Golden City Suite*, his musical tribute to the immigrant communities of San Francisco, commissioned by the Hewlett Foundation and SFJAZZ and premiering this season. Over the past year, Zenón has conducted interviews in the city’s Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, African-American, and other ethnic communities, gathering new perspectives on the contributions of immigrants to San Francisco and its evolution. Zenón will highlight moments from this large-scale work for nonet, including trombonist Jacob Garchik.

Know Before You Go

🎺 There is no assigned seating. The amphitheater seating gives everyone a great view of the performers no matter where you sit. There is limited seating on the bottom floor, which is flat and close to the stage.

🎷 Following select performances are FREE workshops but you need to register in the lobby prior to the show. Space is limited to the first 65 people then they start a waitlist. These half hour workshops vary in content and are inspired by the show. Best to arrive about 20-30 minutes before the show. If you are on the waitlist, a lot of families drop out so it's worth hanging around if you didn’t register on time.

🎹 Kids will be kids and that’s cool. They will cry, comment, giggle, dance, scream run up and down the isles and plan to see the occasional shoe lights twinkle too.

🎤 Allow your kids to be kids. I heard a lot of hushing and parents leaving but don't worry if it's your kid that is making the noise.

🎵 SFJAZZ is located in the the trendy Hayes Valley neighborhood with it’s lovely boutique and specialty shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and more. There’s a small park called Patricia’s Green on Octavia Street between Hayes and Fell, with a playground and inventive sculptures, occasional food trucks and the famous Smitten Ice Cream, serving up made-to-order scoops with its liquid nitrogen technology.
