Family-Friendly Earth Day Events & Ideas: Celebrate, Learn & Make a Difference Together
/Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to get outside, connect as a family, and teach kids how small actions can make a big impact. Celebrated every year on April 22, Earth Day inspires communities around the world to care for our planet, and the best part…it’s a lot of fun! Here’s your guide to planning a meaningful and memory-making Earth Day with kids.
Join an Earth Day event
Many cities host family-friendly park, beach, and neighborhood clean-ups in honor of Earth Day. Kids love the sense of purpose that comes with collecting litter and seeing the immediate difference they’ve made. Here is a list of Earth Day events worth joining:
Take a Solo Nature Walk
A powerful way to foster a child's connection to nature is through a solo nature walk. I first discovered this practice during my daughter’s class trip to Walker Creek in rural Petaluma, CA. It was an incredible way to fully experience the sounds and sensations of the natural world, creating a deeper bond with the Earth. Choose a peaceful trail, lay cards on the ground with different tasks, and send each person out one by one, ensuring they keep a safe distance from others. You can create your own cards tailored to the environment you’re exploring. Encourage a focus on the native plants and animals around you. Some ideas for the cards include: “Whisper a secret to this tree,” “Take a deep breath and notice the scents around you,” “What shapes do the leaves on the ground have?” or even a favorite quote to reflect on.
Earth Day is a starting point, not a finish line. Use it to begin family traditions like monthly park clean-ups, gardening days, or sustainability challenges. When children see adults taking action, they learn that caring for the planet isn’t just something we talk about; it’s something we do.

This year we are celebrating Earth Day all month long and we planned a lot of educational activities and events for adults and kids.
