Juneteenth: Freedom Day @ MoAD

  • Museum of African Diaspora 685 Mission Street San Francisco, CA, 94105 United States (map)

Join us every Second Saturday for THRIVE @ MoAD Community Day with free admission to all our exhibitions. Across the globe, museums are increasingly being recognized as having an important role to play in promoting personal and social well-being in partnership with the health care industry. Studies have shown that engagement with art and culture aid in brain function, processing trauma, and reducing the stigma of mental illness.

This month we will be celebrating Juneteenth!

From 12-2pm, join us for a family art activity led by teaching artist Nicole Dixon in the MoAD lobby.

From 12-1pm, join us in the MoAD Salon for Drag Story Hour! Storytellers using the art of drag to read books to kids (and "kids" of all ages). Drag Story Hour captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where everyone can be their authentic selves!

At 1pm MoAD invites visitors to explore Rachel Jones: β€œ!!!!!”. Meet in the 3rd floor gallery at 1:00 pm for a family-friendly tour of the exhibition followed by a hands-on art activity inspired by the work of Rachel Jones.

From 2-5pm, join us in the MoAD Salon for a Film Screening and Discussion of City of a Million Dreams: Parading for the Dead in New Orleans, a documentary by New Orleans-based filmmaker, author and journalist Jason Berry. A live round table discussion will follow this screening with Jason Berry and the film's chief protagonist, the esteemed New Orleans musician and educator Dr. Michael White.
