We all like special bonuses, right? This month’s night sky brings us a spectacular second full moon in May. This “blue moon,” the term used to describe this type of two-for-one moon, promises to be as striking as ever—though it won’t be blue. As the moon lifts above the horizon, it should appear unusually large and tinted gold or amber, a phenomenon caused by viewing the moon through a thicker layer of Earth’s atmosphere. Join naturalist Harold Hirsch as he leads this hike to the perfect vantage point for this month’s special bonus moon.
