About 60 percent of all bird species migrate. In February, most birds are still in their wintering grounds to the south, but some begin to return to the park to nest and raise their young. Early migrants include tree swallows and violet green swallows, easiest to spot as they swoop over our open meadows in search of flying insects.
We’ll be on the lookout for these beautiful swallows and other species (such as the black phoebe shown here). We will focus on the key points of identification: size and shape, overall color, behavior, and habitat. We'll also discuss the six different types of habitat at China Camp, and what kinds of birds live in each.
