The “buck moon” is named for the season when bucks begin to grow new antlers. The name for this month’s full moon certainly applies here at China Camp, as we’ve been spotting the growing racks on our mature male deer. Antlers are now in “velvet,” in reference to their hairy, skin-like covering. By the fall, antlers will calcify and harden, and bucks will use tree trunks and shrubs to scrape off the dried velvet as they sharpen their horns for battle.
For this full moon hike, we will go on a moderately strenuous, 4-mile round-trip hike. This meandering hike gradually ascends to a vista point, which will offer an unforgettable view of the moon rising over the bay, casting glittering light over the water.
Naturalist Harold Hirsch will guide us on this journey as we learn about the celestial bodies that we might see in the night sky and their relationship to the earth. Harold has over 7 years of experience as a naturalist at China Camp, and he has lead programs on a range of topics, from ecology to mycology and more.
