Join us on Oct. 25th, 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. for a hands-on workshop exploring the Mexican tradition of cartonería (papier-mâché) and the art of making alebrijes. Using recycled paper, cardboard, and other materials, participants will create their own creatures inspired by animals and the natural world. Learn about the history of this art form, how it has been passed down through generations of Mexican artists and families, and how these imaginative creatures have become part of contemporary Día de los Muertos celebrations.
Celebrate Dia de los Muertos with a collaborative community ofrenda, an altar of offerings and remembrance, alongside Tierra Rituals. Our altar will be dedicated to the ancestors, families, indigenous knowledge keepers, and organizers who keep our communities rooted and looking forward. Make your contribution during one of our bilingual Día de los Muertos workshops, then join to see our work at the Fruitvale Día de los Muertos festival in Oakland, CA.
At the center of the altar will be an ancestral milpa, a sustainable living indigenous farm plot that promotes growth and biodiversity. The milpa reminds us that no person, plant, or community survives alone. Our ancestors planted the seeds. We are the living milpa. Our children carry the harvest forward.
For this altar, siblings Lidia Ruelo-Salazar and Erick Salazar bring together their shared roots, family traditions, and practices of healing and art. Erick is an Indigiqueer artist and screen printer whose work reflects his roots, beliefs, and passion for community organizing and creative expression. He uses art as a tool for healing and empowerment, uplifting queer and Indigenous stories and creating space for belonging.
