Berkeley: Dia de los Muertos Community Celebration: Seeds of Remembrance-Seed Calavera Workshop

  • Lawrence Hall of Science 1 Centennial Drive Berkeley, CA, 94720 United States (map)

Join us on Oct. 31, 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. for a hands-on workshop making seed calaveras (skulls) using seeds, soil, and natural materials. Learn about the importance of seeds in Indigenous Mexican traditions, their connection to the ancestral milpa, and the cycles of life, death, and renewal. In celebration of Día de los Muertos, participants will create their own seed calaveras to contribute to our community ofrenda, honoring our ancestors and the generations to come.

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos with a collaborative community ofrenda, an altar of offerings and remembrance, alongside Tierra Rituals. Our altar will be dedicated to the ancestors, families, indigenous knowledge keepers, and organizers who keep our communities rooted and looking forward. Make your contribution during one of our bilingual Día de los Muertos workshops, then join to see our work at the Fruitvale Día de los Muertos festival in Oakland, CA.

At the center of the altar will be an ancestral milpa, a sustainable living indigenous farm plot that promotes growth and biodiversity. The milpa reminds us that no person, plant, or community survives alone. Our ancestors planted the seeds. We are the living milpa. Our children carry the harvest forward.

For this altar, siblings Lidia Ruelo-Salazar and Erick Salazar bring together their shared roots, family traditions, and practices of healing and art. Erick is an Indigiqueer artist and screen printer whose work reflects his roots, beliefs, and passion for community organizing and creative expression. He uses art as a tool for healing and empowerment, uplifting queer and Indigenous stories and creating space for belonging.
