Join us for the City Nature Challenge at Lobos Creek! At this co-collaboration with Bay Nature, we will spend time together in groups for a unique bioblitz as we look for and observe the flora and fauna at Lobos Creek in The Presidio.
What is the City Nature Challenge?
The City Nature Challenge is a four-day international event, motivating people around the world to find and document everything in the natural world in their own cities. There is nature all around us! Knowing what species are in our city and where they are helps us study and protect them, but the ONLY way to do that is by all of us – scientists, land managers, and the community – working together to find and document the nature in our area. By participating in the City Nature Challenge, not only do you learn more about your local nature, but you can also make your city a better place – for you and other species!
What is a bioblitz?
A bioblitz is a quick, intensive survey of the species present in an area, which contributes to our knowledge of local biodiversity. We’ll look for birds, mammals, wildflowers, reptiles, butterflies, beetles, mushrooms—all the nature we can find! People of all ages and skill levels are welcome. You bring your curiosity, a smart phone with the iNaturalist app installed (or a digital camera), and tons of enthusiasm. We'll have naturalist experts joining us to help observe and identify what we find. Together we’ll make some science!
Why is this bioblitz unique?
What makes this bioblitz unique is that we'll be encouraging you to find species in the area and spend time observing them. Taking time to notice, wonder, and think of what you're reminded of are all helpful tools to connect with the nature in front of you. In this way, we invite you to find your biobliss as part of the bioblitz. We’ll show you how to observe, how to record your observations using iNaturalist, and binoculars and hand lenses will be provided.
We'll meet at the Lobos Creek Trailhead, head out to observe, then come back to share our findings! You're welcome to bring your lunch to enjoy with us afterward.
