The Day of the Dead

  • Santa Rosa Courthouse Square (map)

Día de los Muertos is a traditional Meso-American holiday dedicated to the ancestors. It honors both death and the cycle of life.

Welcome to our seventeenth year, of our community's traditional celebration of the Día de los Muertos at Santa Rosa's Courthouse Square. In these past 17 years we have grown into a major Santa Rosa tradition celebrating Community, Life and Death.

The Day of the Dead is an ancient, more than 3000 year old celebration of life. It has been celebrated in Mexico, Central America, and South America since the 1800's, the time of the Mixtec, Zapotec, Aztec and Maya cultures. It is celebrated on All Souls and All Saints Day, November 1st and 2nd. A time to honor those who have passed before us, keep their memories alive, and invite their spirits back for two days of reunion and remembering their lives, histories and stories.

In the past seventeen years, the Santa Rosa Día de los Muertos celebration has evolved into a cross cultural community event with traditional roots that invites all to participate, embracing all cultures. This is an opportunity for the entire community to participate in a cultural event where they can celebrate their roots, honor departed friends, and pass family histories from generation to generation.

Day of the Dead is an alcohol free event.
