Alebrijes y Nahuales: Fantastic Giant Sculptures from Mexico
From the spectacular temples of Monte Albán to the 16 Indigenous languages spoken throughout the valley, Oaxaca’s deep history intimately shapes the present. Evoking the terrain and spirit of the southern Mexican state, Alebrijes y Nahuales is a spectacular sculptural installation that makes its US premiere with a six-week run at Yerba Buena Gardens. Presented by the Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy in partnership with Yerba Buena Gardens Festival and additional partners, the eight sculptures by Oaxacan artisans provide a visual feast while embodying the rich lineage of Mexican magical realism. Curated by Carlo Magno Pedro, artists include Angélico Jímenez, Efraín Fuentes, Margarito Melchor, María Jímenez, Giovanni Melchor and Constantino Blas with Project Direction by Romain Greco. With an average height of 15 feet these whimsical pieces include strategically placed solar lighting that reveal the intricate craftsmanship at all hours of the day. The exhibition run will include educational opportunities, interactive all ages activities and excellent opportunities for photos and selfies.
